9/20/2023 0 Comments Us navy submarine drawing![]() Small and cumbersome, propelled by two screw propellers, the Turtle proved too difficult to operate it failed in its mission to blow up HMS Eagle in New York Harbor and was later sunk. In 1775, the young American David Bushnell, with encouragement from both Benjamin Franklin and George Washington, devised the Turtle to attack the British warships blockading colonial ports. For the next three centuries, while the English continued to dismiss the submarine’s potential, their enemies developed and refined the submarine as a means of attacking the world’s most powerful navy. The boat stayed submerged for three hours, cruising at a maximum depth of about 15 feet.ĭavid Bushnell’s Turtle was the United States’ first military submarine.ĭrebbel’s invention impressed King James – who rode along for a test dive beneath the Thames – but England’s Royal Navy reacted to these demonstrations with indifference, establishing an unfortunate precedent. Few records of Drebbel’s design remain, but he built and successfully tested at least three of these submersibles – the largest of which carried 16 passengers and was demonstrated in front of King James and several thousand spectators. The first submersible boats to be made to Bourne’s description were conceived by Dutch physician Cornelius Drebbel, who tutored the children of King James I and served as “court inventor.” While Bourne had hypothetically solved the problems of buoyancy and air supply, Drebbel added a solution to how the boat could be propelled: A crew of oarsmen, if the boat were properly sealed and ballasted, could drive it. In 1578, seven decades after da Vinci’s death, the English mathematician William Bourne published his own idea for a submersible in the book Inventions or Devices, which included a description of “a shippe or boat that may goe under the water unto the bottome, and so come again at your pleasure.” Though he included no drawings or models, Bourne described how the craft – essentially a wooden boat covered in oiled leather – could be raised or lowered in by filling and emptying ballast tanks, and how its occupants could breathe by means of a hollow mast protruding upward. Leonardo da Vinci, for one, claimed to have figured out how a person could remain submerged for an extended period of time – but also claimed he would never publish the details of this information “because of the evil nature of men who practice assassination at the bottom of the sea.” By now, the Western world’s leading thinkers had begun to envision a kind of underwater boat that could move under propulsion. One of the first actual uses of the diving bell was recorded by Francesco de Marchi of Bologna, who, in 1535, used a primitive one-person diving bell to explore the sunken wrecks of the Emperor Caligula’s fabled Lake Nemi ships. 9/20/2023 0 Comments Librecad vs qcad![]() It is a valid decision, but I cannot emphasize enough that this is their choice, not mine. I’d like to point out that the people behind LibreCAD have chosen to be competitors rather than collaborators of QCAD. They (LibreCAD team) never contacted me about this fork or requested any kind of cooperation which would have been my preferred way of doing things. This is where the two teams provide mutually contradictory information. Needless to say that all these things are undesirable to me. ![]() There is little motivation for me to release anything as open source, knowing that it will immediately be forked.Ī fork of QCAD 3 would create redundancy, take away development funding for future versions of QCAD and last but not least challenge my family’s income. The arrival of LibreCAD makes a new open source release of QCAD 3 in the near future less likely. However, Andrew has a different point of view: ![]() Some even acquired a license in order to support the QCAD developer and encourage him to release the free version. The LibreCAD team ended up writing new help system and creating new CAD fonts to replace the sorely missing bits of the application.Īs QCAD 3 was finally released to the masses in mid-2012, people began to wonder if the Community Edition was coming. Somewhere in the middle of it Ribbonsoft found out that LibreCAD was still using data that didn’t have the same license as the code, and requested the LibreCAD team to remove it. While QCAD 2 was being forked into LibreCAD, I was busy working on QCAD 3 which provides a much better architecture for extending and maintaining QCAD and offers a very powerful and complete scripting interface. So I decided to make my own port, this would lead me to the advantage of knowing QT’s internals better, in case I needed to know that during my CAM project. When I started to do the work and looked around, I noticed there where a lot of complains about that QCad CE was only available for Qt3, and if I would give my CAM program any change to be used by others, I came to the conclusion that I needed a version of QCad in Qt4… In 2010, Ries van Twisk decided to add CAM features to the Community Edition of QCAD and instead got himself into working on the Qt4 port and then on the core features of what later became LibreCAD. Some chosen script extensions and modules could have been released under a different license, creating a new business model. All in all, no reason for hard feelings.Īccording to Andrew Mustun, an open source version of QCAD 3 was also planned and would have made perfect sense from a community perspective as well as a business perspective: Reportedly, there have been few patches and more other kinds of contributions - translations, CAD part library items, fonts, hatch patterns. The lack of strong opinions on the matter could partially be explained by the lack of source code contributions. Andrew says that feedback about QCAD, the QCAD community edition and the business model was mostly positive with very few negative voices. The final release of QCAD 3.0 followed in summer 2012.īefore you ask, according to Ribbonsoft, the whole idea of mixing the open source and the closed source business models wasn’t exactly controversial. The community edition was years old by the time. It was the first new public release of QCAD since late 2009. Indeed, around 2009 the company started rewriting QCAD and released the first public beta version of QCad v3.0 in August 2011. According to Andrew, the time gap between them was usually about a year, and it increased while the lead developer was working on QCAD 3, since there was nothing new to release during that period of completely rewriting QCAD. ![]() The difference between commercial and free versions was mostly about amount of features and the date of availability. QCAD is a CAD system for Windows, Mac and Linux, created by Ribbonsoft and available in two editions: the commercial one and the free one called Community Edition (GPLv2). As if recent LibreDWG story wasn’t quite sufficient, the most recent news is that Ribbonsoft is not going to release Community Edition of QCAD right now. Most new CAD users who are just looking to get a single project completed and don't need to work every day in a CAD application only need a quick 'hop through' Section 1, Section 2 is a bit more technical in nature and discusses the details of how tools work and some of the underlying mechanism as well. It’s quite disturbing how much controversy a small software niche can get in a relatively small timeframe. This manual is divided into 2 Sections: Section 1 -" Introductory CAD Concepts and Uses" and section 2 - "The Command and Feature Reference". Its aim is to describe the way that the LibreCAD software works from a user's perspective. This is the current LibreCAD Users' Manual. ![]() The install deployment type is broken down into 3 main sections/phases: Pre-Install, Install, and Post-Install. Turnip carving at Dover Castle Trick or treating The practice of decorating ‘jack o’lanterns’ is believed to have originated from an Irish folktale – about a man named Jack cursed to spend all of time roaming the earth with only a burning coal (inside a carved out turnip) to light the way, as his punishment for trying to trick the devil.Īcross the British Isles people used turnips, or sometimes beets or potatoes, to make their own versions of these lanterns – carving scary faces into them and placing them near doorways or windows to frighten away Jack and other wandering evil spirits.ĭuring the 19th Century, immigrants to the USA took these traditions with them, and swiftly discovered that pumpkins, the native American fruit, are far easier to carve into elaborate faces and shapes, and make perfect jack o’lanterns. From this term derived the name ‘Halloween’, the name for the beginnings of the festival that was celebrated across Europe in the early Middle Ages, and stuck even as the religious celebrations fell out of favour in later centuries. The 2 November became All Souls’ Day, a day to honour the dead, and here many of the Celtic traditions, such as bonfires, parades and dressing up in costume, blurred with Christian celebrations, to form festivities accepted, and even encouraged, by church authorities.Īll Saints Day later became known as All-Hallows and from this the night before came to be referred to as All-Hallows Eve. ![]() In the era of Christianity, this tradition became absorbed into the celebration of All Saints Day, held on 1 November, dedicated to honouring all saints and martyrs. It was this time of year where people believed the boundary between the worlds of living and dead became blurred, and was when the souls of the dead were said to revisit their homes. The modern-day Halloween is largely agreed to have originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, held around 1 November, the date that marked the transition from autumn to winter. This year, English Heritage is calling on people to remember the turnip – and other Halloween traditions – as they mark this haunting time of year. The pumpkin carved into a jack-o-lantern, for example, is firmly an American introduction, but it quite literally has its roots on the other side of the Atlantic – where people have been carving turnips and other root vegetables for centuries, to ward off evil spirits. Many people herald this as an Americanised festival of ghosts and ghouls – but did you realise that most of the activities associated with this time of year are rooted in European folklore and tradition? As 31 October looms, many people around the country will once again be marking Halloween with what have become traditional activities – carved pumpkins, trick-or-treating and fancy dress. 9/20/2023 0 Comments Annabelle doll conjuring![]() Play icon The triangle icon that indicates to playĮd and Lorraine's son-in-law Tony Spera, who now handles the family business (Ed died in 2006 after complications from an earlier stroke and Lorraine, 89, no longer gives interviews), told me Ed didn't initially believe Lorraine when she said she had psychic abilities. This would sometimes gain the couple entry into the home, at which point Ed would use his self-proclaimed sensitivity to the paranormal to try and figure out what was going on in the house. Once they were married, Ed would paint houses rumored to be haunted, then have Lorraine tell the owners her husband had a gift for them. They met as teenagers at the movie theater where Ed worked, but each developed their affinity for the supernatural as children, Ed while growing up in a house he believed was haunted, and Lorraine while at a Catholic girls' school where she claimed she began sensing people's auras. ![]() Portrayed in the Conjuring films by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, Ed and Lorraine started taking cases - going to houses and checking for demons, ghosts, and other supernatural problems - in the 1940s. Though Annabelle is popular enough to take over a suburban Connecticut banquet hall, she's just one point on the long timeline of Ed and Lorraine Warren's careers as paranormal investigators. They were patiently waiting to be checked in for "An Evening With Annabelle," which consists of a lecture, videos, buffet dinner, and later, we'll all learn, an impromptu acoustic cover of the Beach Boys' "Sloop John B." Everyone in line had to sign a waiver before entering, absolving the hosts from "any liability or traumatic influence associated with viewing the items or being in the presence of Annabelle," but this did not deter eager patrons from making jokes about the lady we were about to meet. Under ultraviolet light it produces an intense yellow-green fluorescence which during World War II was responsible for saving the lives of many downed flyers. One of the most amazing of all fluorescent materials is a synthetic compound, appropriately called fluorescein. The screen is coated with tiny dots of substances which fluoresce in different colours when they are excited by a beam of electrons which is used to scan the picture.īut fluorescent materials had practical uses even before we dreamed of color television. The same idea is used to produce color television pictures. The inside of the tube is coated with a fluorescent material, such as calcium chlorophosphate, which converts the invisible ultraviolet light into visible light. These collide with the mercury atoms which become energized and consequently emit ultraviolet light. The application of an electric current causes a stream of electrons to traverse the tube. Just how do they work? Fluorescent tubes contain a small amount of mercury vapor. Let's shed some further light on this topic consider the omnipresent "fluorescent" lights. This property has led to a variety of uses. Fluorescence is the ability of certain chemicals to give off visible light after absorbing radiation which is not normally visible, such as ultraviolet light. 9/19/2023 0 Comments Scp day break![]() These Builds will all be Available soon in the Properties Tab of SCP:DaybreakĪ "BUILD CHANGE" Update will be published here to Signal that there has been a new Testing Build Ready to test. the sunlight section) -Well done voice overs Cons: - The.
